To help protect consumers from spam and fraud, UK mobile networks apply strict rules to SMS sender names. If your Sender ID doesn’t meet these requirements, your message may be blocked before it reaches your client.
This article explains which types of sender names are not supported, why they are rejected, and how to update your settings so your SMS messages send successfully.
🚫 Sender Names That Don’t Work
UK networks require sender names to clearly identify your business. The following types of names are often rejected:
1. Generic or System-Like Names
Names that look automated or non-brand-specific are considered high-risk and may be blocked.
Avoid using:
Account / Acct
Alert
Verify
Support
Reminder
OTP / One-Time-Passcode
Any other term that doesn’t clearly match your brand
These terms are associated with fraud or mass-messaging, so networks filter them out.
2. Names Containing Spaces
Most UK networks do not allow spaces in sender names, even if the total length is within the limit.
Examples that will fail:
Dave's AcctMy BusinessABC Group
3. Names Longer Than 11 Characters
Sender IDs must be 11 characters or fewer.
Anything longer will be rejected.
Examples that are too long:
DaveandJulies
AccountingAbacusandcalculationConsultants(15 characters)
4. Names That Don’t Match a Real Business Name
Sender names must reflect your trading or registered business name. Internal codes, abbreviations or shortened forms that don’t clearly relate to your company may be rejected.
Examples likely to fail:
DaveA
cctNumber
Acct(orZest Acct)BillingTeamOfficeMsg
✔️ What Does Work: Creating a Valid Sender Name
A compliant UK sender name must be:
Based on your actual business or trading name
11 characters or fewer
Alphanumeric only (A–Z and 0–9)
No spaces
Not generic or misleading
Examples of acceptable sender names:
DaveLtdStoneGroupTyrrells
UKMitchelandsonSolEngager
Choose something short, clear and instantly recognisable as your business.
🔧 How to Fix Your Sender Name in Engager
If your SMS messages are failing, updating your Sender ID should resolve the issue.
Go to Settings → Company Information.
Locate the SMS Sender ID field.
Replace your current sender name with one that fits the rules above.
Save your changes.
Your new Sender ID will be used immediately for all outgoing messages.
💡 Tips for Choosing a Good Sender Name
Use a clear abbreviation of your business name if the full name is too long.
Keep capitalisation simple—networks don't rely on it.
Avoid words that might appear automated (Account, Support, Info, Verify, etc.).
Stick to letters and digits only.
